Construction Begins
We're excited to announce that construction began on the West Newton Armory at the end of May 2025, marking a significant milestone in transforming this historic building into permanently affordable intergenerational housing. We estimate these 43 new apartments will be move-in ready during winter 2026/2027.
Overview
The West Newton Armory project represents a collaborative effort between Metro West Collaborative Development and Civico Development to address our community's critical need for affordable housing. We were selected by the City of Newton through a competitive RFP process to redevelop the former armory building at 1135-1137 Washington Street into 100% affordable housing while maintaining its architectural significance.
Managing Construction Impacts
We continue to work closely with our partners to mitigate construction impacts and limit disruptions to our neighbors. Throughout the construction process, we will implement appropriate erosion controls and environmental protection measures to ensure minimal impact on the surrounding neighborhood.
Important Note: Concurrent with this project, the Washington Street Redesign and construction for Newton Crossing are also occurring, which will likely disrupt street parking in 2025. We encourage neighbors to plan accordingly and refer to the linked resources for further details about these concurrent projects.
Construction Contacts
If you have questions or concerns during construction, please contact:

Looking Ahead: Housing Lottery
Toward the end of construction, a housing lottery will be conducted for interested residents. There will be a deadline announced for applications, and any applications submitted after this deadline will be placed on the post-lottery waitlist on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applicants with the lowest lottery number placements will be contacted for final eligibility determination.
More information about the application process, eligibility requirements, and lottery timeline will be shared as it becomes available.
